A clubhouse is a community-based location designed to support the recovery of people living with serious mental illness (SMI). Each clubhouse provides a restorative environment for people whose lives have been severely disrupted because of their mental illness.
In each clubhouse, an intentional community is created, where members and staff work together, side-by-side, to carry out all daily operations of the clubhouse. Members are also given access to crisis intervention services when needed and are connected with resources to support their basic needs, including support with employment, relationship building, education, housing, and daily meals.
The clubhouse model of psychosocial rehabilitation is supported by strong scientific evidence that shows it can be very helpful for people with mental health issues. Studies have found that joining clubhouse programs can lead to better social skills, more job opportunities, a better quality of life, and fewer hospital visits. The model focuses on getting people involved in their community, learning useful skills through meaningful work, and having support from their peers, which helps them recover by giving them more control and strength. Research also suggests that being part of a clubhouse can help people stick to their treatment plans and feel better over time. These scientifically proven results make the clubhouse model a really important way to approach psychosocial rehabilitation.
